Tax Refund Procedure for Lump-Sum Withdrawal Payments
– Supported by a Certified Tax Accountant

To All Foreign Nationals Who Have Worked in Japan

Many foreign nationals who have worked in Japan and returned to their home countries receive a Pension Lump-Sum Withdrawal Payment.

Under Japanese tax law, approximately 20% of this payment is withheld as income tax.
For example, if the lump-sum payment is ¥1,000,000, around ¥200,000 will be withheld as income tax, and the actual amount received will be approximately ¥800,000.

However, this withheld tax (around ¥200,000) can be almost entirely refunded through a specific tax refund procedure.

At our office, a certified tax accountant will accurately and promptly support your tax refund application.
We also offer a comprehensive support plan that covers both the application for the lump-sum withdrawal payment and the subsequent tax refund procedure, in cooperation with our partner labor and social security attorney (sharoushi).

No worries — our services are easy to use even from overseas.

What is a Lump-Sum Withdrawal Payment?

A Lump-Sum Withdrawal Payment is a one-time pension refund available to foreign nationals who were enrolled in the Employees’ Pension Insurance system in Japan and have since returned to their home countries.

When the payment is made, approximately 20% is automatically withheld as income tax.
However, under certain conditions, it is possible to apply for a tax refund from the Japanese tax office.

Please note that the deadline to apply for the tax refund is within five years from the date you receive the Lump-Sum Withdrawal Payment.

The highlighted amount in yellow on the payment notification image shows the amount of tax withheld.

From the total Lump-Sum Withdrawal Payment of ¥880,618, an income tax of ¥179,822 has been automatically withheld.

However, the good news is that this ¥179,822 can be almost fully refunded by filing a tax return.

Our firm offers a service where we act as your tax agent (Zeimu Kanrinin) and handle the entire tax filing process on your behalf.
